MRR assists forgotten school

Members of Malherbe, Rigg & Ranwell (MRR) one of the city’s oldest active law firms, recently donated two computers to Ekukhanyeni Primary School, in Ramaphosa as well as another unit to Sithand’izingane Care Project in Tsakane, as part of its ongoing outreach projects.

The donation comes after some of the directors and staff members accompanied Angie Reiners, manager the iTemba Support Centre in Reiger Park, to the school to promote the centre’s ‘Keep the School Safe’ programme to raise awareness of drug and alcohol abuse as well as violence in schools.
During their visit, the MRR contingent gained first- hand experience of the harsh conditions the nearly 1000 pupils and 28 teachers had to work under.

“It was heartbreaking to witness the appalling condition of the school; the grass is wildly overgrown, there is no playground to speak of, no electricity and rain is pouring in through the shattered windows where children crowded a few desks,” said Antoinette Swanepoel, a director at the firm.

“According to the principal Mapule Gwangwa, the school is in dire need of classrooms, tables, desks, chairs, a photocopy machine and computers, to better facilitate the introduction of the new curriculum.

“It was in light of the startling revelation that we, with the help of Grinaker-LTA in Jet Park, decided to donate two computers to the school with a third unit being donated to the Sithand’izingane Care Project in Tsakane.”

MRR is appealing to the local business community to assist it in its efforts to get the Ekukhanyeni Primary School up to standard.
