Malherbe Rigg & Ranwell Inc. held its annual Moot Court Competition on Wednesday the 24th March 2010. Students from The Graduate Academy participated in the event.
The event is designed to create a Court atmosphere where eight students from The Graduate Academy were assigned to two teams, one team arguing in favour of a particular outcome and the other against. The legal scenario was based in the law of freedom of speech and the law of defamation, two of the most current and topical constitutional dispensations of modern democratic South Africa.
The professional staff of Malherbe Rigg & Ranwell developed the legal scenario which the participants were required to debate before two Judges and an audience comprising of guests from the Academy and the Law Firm. The two Judges were senior directors of Malherbe Rigg & Ranwell, Mr. Jeff Matthee and Mr. Brian Macgregor.
The evening was a fantastic success demonstrating not only that the further development of our constitution to realize and safeguard fundamental rights is necessary, but also that there are very talented and promising young individuals who may very well be the instruments of that exact change.
