wheelchair handover 2010...
Keep the wheels turning
A 50th birthday celebration, a big walk and a selfless wish has brought mobility to six children currently attending the Muriel Brand School, in Brakpan.
Judith and Geoffrey Pearson, of Horwich, England along with members of the Van Ryn Rotary Club and representatives of Malherbe, Rigg and Ranwell (MRR) donated six, light weight foldable wheelchairs to the school thus, bringing an end to Judith’s 50th birthday celebrations which started in May 2009.
Judith, who is the current President of the Rotary’s Inner Wheel Club, in Horwich had decided that for her 50th birthday she would like to collect enough money to buy 50 wheelchairs, which in turn will be donated to those in need in SA.
With the support of 120 of her friends, family and interested members of the community who joined her on a sponsored walk 7 500 pounds sterling was raised and 110 wheelchairs were subsequently purchased.
According to Jeff Matthee, a director at MRR, the Muriel Brand School was identified due to its unwavering commitment to those living with disabilities.
“The firm as well as the Van Ryn Rotary Club, have had a long standing relationship with the school and have first-hand experience of what the kids and educators achieve everyday, through hard work and dedication,” he said.
“We are grateful for Judith’s selfless gesture towards the upliftment and development of those in need and believe that this act of kindness will forever be treasured in the hearts of those affected.”
